The hemd
June 13th, 2005
For this chemise, I decided to go with a fully pleated front and a pleat-free back for comfort reasons. Also because I hate it when you can see a bunch of bumps and wrinkles through my gowns. It will be much lighter this way and still historicaly accurate I believe. I have some soft but yet fairly heavy linen for it. Here's the layout...
I wont be sewing it right away because I'm in the middle of something right now but, since it's very light, I'll be taking it with me on vacation in a few weeks so that I can work on it while watching my son at the pool or at the beach. I'll also be working on my son's shift while I'm in there.
July 24th
Well, I'm back from my trip and my hemd is done.
All the seams are double folded to prevent plushing and are hem stitched in place. Note that the narrow neck-band isn't cut on the bias, as all period exemples known to this day indicate that in period, those were cut on the straight grain.
