The fringe
April 03, 2005
Up 'til here, I only found evidence of one or three colors used for a fringe in period art. However, mine will be red only. I have more of these in my files but I decided to put only one exemple of each style or color on this page.
The cord will be tablet-weaved by using only 3 cards and I'm still not sure if the hanging strings will be passed in while weaving or attached to the band after it's done... I'm still thinking about it. The wool thread is very fine, I'll be using a 4 ply from "Patons Kroy Socks"
That's it for now, I'll put up a picture page once I'm done with the rest of this outfit.
I must be doing something wrong because this doesn't look right at all, it looks more like a lucet cord than a card-weaved trim ! I've tapped the thread at the bottom everytime but for some reason, it isn't tight at all, I can see through the cord... And why isn't it flat ??? Boy, I really suck at this !!! Hé ! hé!
By the way, 3 tablets was way too much so, I droped down to 2. Here's what it looks like ; Could someone please tell me what I've done wrong ? I only tryed tablet-weaving to an edge before, maybe this is done differently ?

I decided that I'm very bad at handling tablets so I decided to make myself a temporary contraption to be able to weave the classic way. I think I'm in *love* ! Wow, in just 2 1/2 hours, I weaved a trim of a whole yard long ! It's so easy and relaxing... I love it, I love it, I love it !!!

Now I'm even thinking of making myself some garters and other stuff with that simple technique ! Woo Hoo !!! So here's what I did ; A simple knot at one end (attached to a chair), scotsh-tape to help seperate the threads, A rubber piece made out of a table center-piece pierced with the same number of holes as the number of threads (in this case 8), another knot at the other end pined to the bed or to my waist (with another piece of scotsh-tape to seperate the threads) and voilà !
Since the trim isn't very wide, I used my needle to push and tighten the weft as I went along. This was only a test but since I love it that much, I'll start over and incorporate the fringe directly in as I weave... Woo Hoo ! I'm *SO* excited about this ! It's BEAUUUUTIFUL and *I'M* the one who made it !!! Hé! hé!

I still have a small 10" to weave but in the meantime, here's what it looks like... The fringe has been weaved in and is integral part of the trim. This is fun !

Just for you Barb !!!
Here's a shortened layout of the weaving process. Before passing the thread, tap the previous row very tightly with your needle flat. Keep it up until you get a trim of about 14 inches long then leave a long thread hanging and cut small pieces of wool that you weave-in the same way. Always make a double knot with the previous one. The fringe itself should be of about 6 inches wide (leave the threads longer, you'll cut them all even once you're done). Than you start again with a regular weave for another 14 inches and you're done. You can either make a big knot at the end that gathers all the threads or make a serie of small knot in a "macramé style".

Well, I'm done. I took some quick pictures but because of the bad light, it doesn't quite look like the actual thing. For some reason, it looks incredibly furnished and heavy on the pics but in reality, it's very light, it doesn't "friz" that way and it's kinda "see-through". Also, my hair looks awfull, I fixed them-up in less then a minute, the braids are hanging way too low in the back. Anyway, bad pics are still bether than no pics at all so, here they are...
And a little bonus...
I've been fantasysing on this little bugger for more then a month so, I decided to indulge myself and make a quick one out of scraps  just for the heck of it.
It's way too short and the fringes at the tip are too big but, hey, I made it in 20 minutes by cutting directly into the fab so, let's just say that it's a prototype and I took it out for a test-drive !!! hé! hé!
